Musical freedom and mastery
In recent decades, Louis Sclavis has become the undisputed Grand maître of French jazz. He combines a phenomenal technique with a unique language and vision.
For his next passage, he is assisted by two other clappers, with whom he has been working closely for years: violinist Dominique Pifarély and cellist Vincent Courtois.
Sclavis has a stalwart discography that excels in stylistic diversity, technical mastery and exceptional dedication.
His music constantly moves across the spectrum, not only from one geographical end to the other, but also from composed music to forays into spontaneous chamber music and free jazz.
The collaboration with Pifarély and Courtois goes back a quarter of a century, but Asian Field Variations (ECM, 2017) is their first achievement as a trio.
The three are at home in many styles and worlds, from modern composition to free improvisation. They manage to endlessly renew the traditions of their instruments.
