Chris Thile (mandolin)
SOLO ON THE MANDOLIN
Multiple Grammy Award-winner and MacArthur Fellow, Chris Thile, is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist, perhaps best known for his ongoing work in the highly influential acoustic bands Punch Brothersand Nickel Creek.
Thile’s solo performances drawing from his considerable repertoire of original compositions, as well as contemporary, traditional and classical works.
Thile treats the mandolin as if it had a long virtuoso tradition, with constantly changing shapes and rhythms in the solo line
With influences as wide ranging as Bill Monroe, Radiohead, Claude Debussy and Brad Mehldau, Thile transcends the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres, creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike.
As a soloist, Thile has released six albums including his most recent, Bach: Partitas and Sonatas, Vol.1, which was produced by renowned bassist Edgar Meyer.
He reinterprets Bach's solo violin pieces for mandolin to stunning effect. His finger work is as extraordinary as the variety of textures he coaxes from his instrument. An album to lose yourself in
