Bertrand Chamayou (piano)
A HERO TO CHERISH
“Let the devil play this thing”, shouted Schubert when he had to admit that he himself could not play his Wanderer Fantasy properly. The work is a visionary cross between a sonata, improvisation and variation, based on motifs from one of his most successful lieder, Der Wanderer.
Liszt was extremely impressed by the Fantasy, and played and studied it exhaustively to rewrite it as a concerto in four movements. Throughout his life he tried to attract the attention of a wider audience to Schubert’s work, through pioneering but seldom played transcriptions of well-known pieces. This concert by celebrated interpreter Bertrand Chamayou will certainly make sparks fly.
