STUFF. is a Belgian five-piece instrumental live band that takes you on a groovy ride with eclectic sounds that flit between hip-hop, avant-garde, jazz, funk and electro. The band was founded when drummer Lander Gyselinck played live music with some musician friends in Ghent's White Cat between DJ sets.
A few years later, the band was already artist in residence at the AB and they went on to play at Gent Jazz, Best Kept Secret and Pukkelpop. The five are now ready with their third album T(h)reats, which has been enthusiastically received at home and abroad.
The record draws inspiration from both live tours and other projects. Some tracks are based on compositions, others are arrangements of improv sessions.
“After hours of talking, philosophizing and fantasizing about what the album's new approach might be, nothing concrete emerged. Then we just started making music to see where we would end up, like we always have. As a result, in this time and with this group of people, this is what came out of it.” - STUFF.
It’s a really exciting time for music with groups coming through like STUFF.
The concert at Gent Jazz taught us that they remain young, fresh, frisky, wild, entertaining, cheerful and uncompromising live.
With Dishwasher_, Arno Grootaers (Pavlove), Werend Van Den Bossche (Suura) and Louise van den Heuvel (Supernova) make jazz for people who don't like jazz.
The musicians try to break boundaries between genres in order to arrive at a unique sound and style. The love and interest for electronic music, combined with improvisation, are the common thread running through the compositions.
