Between classical music and jazz

Daan Vandewalle is an adventurous pianist. He combines classical repertoire with contemporary works by, for example, Fred Frith, Frederic Rzewski, Alvin Curran and Maria de Alvear, who are often written especially for him.

The Dutch drummer (and knight) Han Bennink is his perfect counterpart with an impressive record. He played with all the great ones, from pianist Uri Caine to John Zorn himself. When he crawls behind his drum set, he seems surprised at every stroke, visibly enjoying everything that comes at him.

Vandewalle opens the concert solo with a number of piano pieces, including John Zorn's 'Carny'. Then they go out together. Expect a colorful ride with the necessary twists.

His first percussion instrument was a kitchen chair. Later his father, an orchestra percussionist, supplied him with a more conventional outfit, but Han never lost his taste for coaxing sounds from unlikely objects he finds backstage at concerts. He is still very fond of playing chairs.
