FESTIVAL CREATION

In Greek mythology, Ariadne helped her hero escape from the labyrinth with the help of a woollen thread. For this concert, the world-famous lyre player Ross Daly takes young musicians from Belgium, Greece and Turkey along with him on a musical journey.

GREECE AND TURKEY

Their journey begins with the rich Greek-Turkish musical tradition, with forays into early Western music practices. The musicians from De draad van Ariadne (Ariadne’s Thread) unravel their traditions to weave a new musical dialogue. This is a unique festival project with many surprises in store.

Ross Daly (Cretan lyre & tarhu), Murat Aydemir (tanbur), Taxiarchis Georgoulis (oud), Kelly Thoma (Cretan lyre), Romina Lischka (viola da gamba), Sofie Vanden Eynde (lute and theorbo), Simon Leleux (percussion)

ÇIĞDEM ASLAN

Istanbul-based Çiğdem Aslan sings tender Anatolian folk songs in the various different languages and styles for which the region is renowned– from Turkish and Kurdish to Greek, Bosnian, Bulgarian and Ladino. Tahir Palili completes the picture with his rich baglama accompaniment.

AN ACCLAIMED DEBUT

Aslan grew up in the Alevi culture, in which music plays a central role. Gradually, she also familiarised herself with the other sounds of Istanbul and beyond. Her debut Mortissa (2013) is packed with rebetika and Greek songs, chiefly from the 1930s. It was heralded as one of the best albums of 2013 by the music magazine fRoots and won the prestigious ‘German Record Critics Award’ in 2014.

Çiğdem Aslan (vocals, percussion), Nikos Baimpas (kanun), Michalis Kouloumis (violin), Colin Somerwell (double bass), Ant Romero (percussion)
