Giovanna Pessi & Susanna Wallumrød ‘If Grief Could Wait’
The Norwegian pop singer Susanna Wallumrød, who, among others, gave a brilliant rendition of Joy Division’s Love will tear us apart, has completed a worldwide tour with her band ‘Susanna and the Magical Orchestra’. Swiss baroque harpist Giovanna Pessi reached international fame by collaborating with prominent musicians. For her debut, she decided to join forces with Susanna Wallumrød.
‘If Grief Could Wait’, their mutual project, is an ode to the music and songs by Henry Purcell (1659-1695). In addition to a selection from this repertoire, the haunting album features songs by Susanna Wallumrød herself, Leonard Cohen, and Nick Drake.
Attentive listeners will notice a viola da gamba and a ‘nyckelharpa’, a Swedish violin with resonating strings. Combined with the masterful orchestration, Susanna Wallumrød’s clear, delicate voice brings dramatic tension to the recording. After all, these are all sad, melancholic songs, typical of the 16th and 17th centuries. The critically acclaimed ‘If Grief Could Wait’ immediately received five stars from The Independent. The Guardian stated: ‘Wallumrød’s personality within such a formal pattern of early music is enchanting.’
At 11 AM Susanna performs solo at Handelsbeurs in the context of Foyer Matinee.
